Two customers who went for “vampire facials” at VIP Spa in Albuquerque have been diagnosed with HIV. The New Mexico Department of Health announced that the two spa customers were infected with the same virus. This made it more likely that the facial procedure they underwent at the spa occasioned their HIV infection.

Vampire facial was made popular in 2013 after Kim Kardashian West posted a Instagram selfie with blood on her face. Also known as plasma-rich protein facial, vampire facial is a procedure where syringes are used to inject nutrient-rich plasma taken from the customer’s blood into the skin of their face. The syringe used for the procedure is called a micro-needling pen.

Vampire Facials Customers Must Ensure That New Syringes Are Used Right Before Their Eyes

Vampire facial procedure is believed to promote youthfulness by rejuvenating the skin to look younger.

Dr. Ehsan Ali, a board-certified internal medicine physician, said unsterilized micro-needling pen could cause infections among vampire facial customers. When blood from another individual is also used for a customer, this could expose the individual to blood infections.

Ali warned people undergoing the procedure to personally ensure that they witness practitioners using and changing new syringes in front of them before drawing or injecting blood with them.

Hundreds of people have done plasma-rich protein facial at the spa, prompting health officials to ask people to come forward for tests. The New Mexico Department of Health said free tests and counseling services will be provided to customers who had undergone any sort of injection-related services at the spa.

Unsterilized Equipment Used For Vampire Facials Can Spread Diseases

The free testing covers HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C among others. The service is available for customers who did vampire facials at VIP Spa between May and September 2018. Concerned customers can visit the South Valley Health Commons as well as the Casa de Salud Family Medical Office in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for free testing.

Regulatory agencies shut down VIP Spa in Semptember 7, 2018 after officials found they engaged in unsafe procedures that could expose customers to HIV, hepatitis B and C among other blood-borne infections.
