Researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) have proven the existence of new strains of microbes in the fecal matter of people who underwent surgery for obesity. The scientists found that surgically disrupting the stomach and upper small intestine for weight reduction produced the new microbial strains.

The UAB researchers made this observation in obese patients who went through one of two types of obesity surgery. The two weight reduction surgeries are Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. In sleeve gastrectomy, stomach reduction is done. And in Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the portion of the stomach where food is stored is reduced, but the remaining part of the stomach together with the first part of the small intestine is surgically bypassed.

New Bacterial Strains from Fecal Donor Matter Can Remain For Years in the Body

“Our results show that, when you change the upper GI tract with obesity surgery, you also change the gut environment, resulting in the emergence of new strains of microbes,” said Casey Morrow, Ph.D., leader of the research team and professor emeritus in UAB’s Department of Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology.

There are between 500 to 1,000 bacteria species in the human body. They are good bacteria that promote good health – including organ development, enhanced metabolism and modulation of the immune system. And then, a study says one gram of human feces may contain up to one billion bacteria.

With a bioinformatics technique developed at UAB – known as window-based similarity single-nucleotide-variant (WSS), the scientists in 2017 demonstrated that microbes in fecal matter transplanted to treat recurrent Clostridium difficile infections remained for months and years inside patients.

Antibiotics and Chemotherapy Can Alter the Microbe Community in the Human Body

In a research published in the Human Microbiome Journal, Morrow reviewed fecal samples extracted from patients before obesity surgery and one to two years after the operation. The study involved 18 patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and six other patients going through sleeve gastrectomy.

The team of scientists revealed that new microbe strains emerged in the fecal community of patients after the upper gastrointestinal tract was altered. According to Morrow, the new microbial strains may have originated from the tissue microbes of the small intestine. The new strains are a reflection of the environmental changes in the GI tract occasioned by the obesity surgery.

The take-away from the study is that people are capable of harboring several strains of the same microbes when there is permanent surgical operation in the gut. It also shows that antibiotics and chemotherapy for cancer among other major treatments can alter the structure and population of the microbe community in the human body.
