Smoking, diabetes and high blood pressure are bad for women’s hearts

A new study published in the British Medical Journal shows women are at higher risks of heart attack from three main factors. Conducted by Oxford University researchers, the study found women are at greater risks of heart attack than men when they smoke, have diabetes and suffer high blood pressure.

Broken down, these factors elevate a woman’s risks for having myocardial infarction or heart attack in the following ratio –

  • Hypertension – 83%
  • Smoking – 55%
  • Diabetes – 47%

The researchers studied 472,000 people aged 40-69 from 2006 to 2010. About 56% of the study participants were women.

The authors of the study revealed that several factors predispose people to heart attack. But smoking, hypertension, Type-1 and 2 diabetes raise the risks more in women than in men. Ordinarily, men suffer more heart attacks then women; but with the three given factors, the scale tilts more to women than men.

Another research shows fish oil and Vitamin D reduce risks of heart attack and cardiovascular diseases.

The researchers warn doctors who have elderly female patients that smoke, have diabetes and hypertension to watch out for possible heart attack. Some of the symptoms associated with heart attack include –

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pains in the torso and limbs
  • Fatigue, dizziness, cold sweats, nausea and vomiting, etc.

Analysts said the study had a shortcoming. Most of the participants were whites who were rich with socioeconomic influences. Related future studies will include subjects from various races and socioeconomic status for diversity.

However, Elizabeth Millett, epidemiologist from The George Institute in the UK, said the study underscored the “importance of equitable access to guideline based treatments for diabetes and hypertension, and to weight loss and smoking cessation programmes for women and men in middle and older age.”
