A new study conducted by researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics reveals breastmilk sugar changes according to the diet and probiotics taken by pregnant women. The human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are sugars molecule found exclusively in human breastmilk. The study shows HMO could be modified by diet and drugs even though researchers never knew this was possible.

Newborns cannot digest HMOs. The compound can be changed when the gut bacteria changes as a result of supplementation. Researchers now believe that infants who feed exclusively on breastmilk and innoculated by its component HMOs fall less ill. Such children fight off bacterial and viral infections, necrotizing enterocolitis, and do not get easily sick from several allergies.

Co-author of the study, Dr.Lars Bode, associate professor of Pediatrics at the University of California San Diego, noted that maternal dietary bacteria can alter HMO compositions. Blood type is fixed genetically and cannot be changed by anything, but the new study shows HMOs are not like this and can be modified by external factors such as diets.

The study included 81 pregnant women who served as participants. They were divided into two groups – one fed probiotic supplements and the other not given anything.

The researchers hope to analyze the impacts of some supplements and foods on certain HMOs in the future. This is to enable them customize and optimize HMO compounds to fight certain diseases. Since infants consuming enough of breastmilk are rarely affected by allergies, scientists are looking into optimizing HMOs to prevent food allergies.

This goes to show that there are immense health benefits when infants are fed with adequate breastmilk. HMOs are one of the major compounds making them stronger and able to fight off infections and diseases. Scientists think it is high time HMOs are modified to treat several conditions in adults.
