People who plan on quitting junk foods should look forward to experiencing withdrawal symptoms similar to those quitting drugs. This assertion was established by researchers from the University of Michigan in a study published in the journal Appetite. The authors of the study found that quitting highly processed foods may prove difficult as kicking a lifestyle of drugs.

The first week of quitting processed food often proves the most difficult. The withdrawal symptoms may taper off after one week. The same is often true with drug addicts struggling to quit drugs. Quitting a lifetime of French fries, pizza, pastries and other highly processed foods is like giving up on narcotics. The experience of withdrawal is similar.

Effects of Junk Food Withdrawal on the Individual Proves the Validity of Food Addiction

Analysts believe this is the first study of its kind to examine the effects discontinuing processed foods have on people. The study’s lead author is Erica Schulte, a psychology doctoral candidate at the University of Michigan.

The addictive properties of narcotics, alcohol and tobacco affect the brain to produce euphoria. When these substances are not available, the brain which has become dependent on them feels it and it leads to negative side effects. Some of these outcomes include –

  • Anxiety
  • Headaches
  • Irritability
  • Depression
  • Numbness, etc.

Understanding the effects of quitting highly processed foods on the brain underscores the validity of food addiction.

Difficulties of Withdrawal in the First Week Could Induce People to Revert Back to Bad Eating Habits

The researchers analyzed the physical and psychological impacts of food withdrawal on 231 study participants. These participants documented the phases their bodies went through when they withdrew from fast foods in the year before. Almost all of them reported experiencing cravings, weakness, irritability and sadness in the first five days of quitting fast foods. The side effects disappeared after a few days.

“Junk food can be absolutely irresistible,” said Dr. Nandi in a YouTube video. “But if you try to cut back on those delicious processed foods, you’ll be up against some nasty withdrawal-like symptoms, similar to what a drug addict would experience.”

The U-M researchers did not pay attention to how the study participants quit eating junk foods. This “how” could be gradually phasing out junk food or quitting it at once. According to Schulte, future studies will examine this aspect in real time instead of retrospectively as in the current study.

Ashley Gearhardt, assistant professor of psychology and co-author of the study noted that the research made one thing clear: the dietary withdrawal symptoms could make people to revert back to bad eating habits within the first-week challenge if care is not taken.

Other researchers in the findings are Julia Smeal and Jessi Lewis, both U-M graduates.
