A study published in the journal Human Reproduction suggests that men who smoke marijuana produce higher concentrations of sperm. The same is true of men who had smoked marijuana in the past. The research found that men who smoke weed produce an average sperm concentration of 62.7 million sperm per milliliter of ejaculate. While men who never smoked cannabis in their entire lives produce an average concentration of 45.4 million sperm per milliliter of ejaculate.

The study was conducted by researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Study participants were from the Fertility Clinic of the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Associate professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard Chan School, Jorge Chavarro, said the study opens up a lot of knowledge about the reproductive health effects of marijuana. He however called for caution, telling men not to go off and begin smoking weed on account of this study. He said further research is required to determine the specific benefits of marijuana use.

Recreational Marijuana Has Beneficial Health Effects That Require Further Investigations

It is projected that about 18% of adults use marijuana in the United States. Many more people continue to clamor for legalization of recreational marijuana in recent years. With renewed understanding that little health risks are associated with cannabis use; it has become more important to understand its overall health effects.

In conducting this study, the researchers obtained 1,143 semen samples from 663 men between 2000 and 2017. Most of the men were educated whites and averaged 36 years of age. Also, 317 of the participants gave blood samples which were tested for reproductive hormones. Then the study participants were asked to fill out a questionaire that sought to know if they were current weed smokers or ever smoked more than two joints in the past.

About 365 or 55% of the study participants said they had smoked pot at one point or the other in the lives. Out of these, 44% said they were former cannabis smokers and 11% said they still smoke weed presently.

Moderate Marijuana Use Boosts Sperm Production and Increases Sexual Tendencies

The researchers were equally able to find higher serum testosterone levels were common to cannabis smokers.

There are three downsides to the study:

  • Participants may have underreported the extent to which they used marijuana considering the fact that its use was illegal when the study took place.
  • Since the participants were drawn from patients seeking treatment from a fertility clinic, the integrity of the study remains unknown when applied to men everywhere.
  • There are scanty related studies with which to compare the results obtained in this study.

Feiby Nassan, lead author of the study and a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard Chan School, came to two conclusions. Low level of marijuana use could be beneficial to sperm production given its proven effect on the endocannabinoid system. And men with higher testosterone levels are prone to risky behaviors, including smoking marijuana.
