Woman reveals how she has been using makeup to deal with disability issues

Press Release

Kelley O’Brien has disability issues. She is diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). She also has myalgic encephalomyelitis and might equally be suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

She had always had vertigo too. Kelley now uses makeup extensively to hide her frailty and make herself presentable to the general public, Yahoo Lifestyle writes.

But Kelley’s disability issues show no signs of abating. She is however devising ways to deal with it. Enter makeup. Kelley’s ordeal with failing health began when she was 19.

She fainted at her campus job and fainting spells became a daily episode in her life. Frequent doctor visits and specialist attention eventually revealed she had POTS and other related health conditions.

Using a Cane to Walk Says A Lot about Kelley’s Complicated Health Conditions

POTS is a health complication where the heart rate is abnormally high. It is a disorder of the autonomic system makes the heart rate to increase when an individual stands up or remains standing.

It is usually a co-morbid condition, meaning that a suferer has two or more other chronic conditions. Symptoms of POTS include –

  • Dizziness
  • Fainting spells
  • Brain fog
  • Body pain
  • General weakness, etc.

The combination of vertigo and POTS worsened Kelley’s condition. Standing for any length of time became a problem and walking any short distance is too much trouble. Sometimes getting out of bed is painful because her joints ached.

Her fainting spells increased to as many as twice a day, and she suffered short term memory loss. When she became chronically ill, she steadied herself with a cane to be able to walk.

Makeup Hasn’t Cured Me by Any Means, but It Has Boosted My Self-Esteem

“After my diagnosis, things in my life began making a lot of sense,” Kelley recalled. And this is when her interest in makeup became renewed and she applied it to hide her frailty. “With makeup, I could still control how I looked…after becoming disabled.”

Kelley used gold eyeshadow, lipstick, concealer, eyeliner, eyeshadow, and foundation among others to look good to people.

“I could swipe on gold eyeshadow and a vibrant lipstick and feel confident that, for as miserable as I felt, at least I wouldn’t look miserable,” she said. “Makeup became a therapeutic part of my morning routine. Makeup hasn’t cured me by any means, but it has boosted my self-esteem and given me more confidence.”

Cynerio Introduces Virtual Segmentation to Healthcare IoT Cybersecurity

Published

on

Press Release

Medical-first virtual segmentation cuts healthcare IoT security project times from more than a year to weeks and provides confidence in continuous medical services

Cynerio, a leading provider of healthcare IoT cybersecurity solutions, announced today the addition of the virtual segmentation capability to their platform. Safe and effective healthcare IoT security projects can take over a year to execute due to a lack of visibility into network topology and sensitive device operations. Building effective cybersecurity policy requires thorough analysis and the ability to contextualize and prioritize devices according to impact. The Cynerio platform’s new virtual segmentation capability automatically delivers safe and effective policies in a matter of weeks by customizing segmentation policy for every device type, limiting the attack surface, and ensuring clinical services remain intact.

The virtual segmentation capability profiles device communications and generates East-West and North-South segmentation policies, allowing IT security teams to test the policies and monitor for violations before pushing it to live clinical network environments. The AI-based technology groups devices and segments them according to network behavior while risk is prioritized based on device criticality and medical impact. The platform then monitors the network to ensure all traffic is compliant with policy, and provides tools to refine it, sending automatic updates when policy is safe to push to firewall and NAC.

“The challenge of achieving safe and effective segmentation is what inspired us to develop the virtual segmentation capability for our customers,” states Leon Lerman, CEO and co-founder of Cynerio. “Our top priority is making healthcare IoT security projects as easy and painless as possible by helping hospitals safely navigate the risks of immediately enforcing segmentation policies in clinical environments. Cynerio already offers seamless integration with top-tier cybersecurity tools like Cisco, Check Point, Forescout, Palo Alto, and more. Adding virtual segmentation to our platform saves hospitals years of time and resources spent on IoT security projects and provides policies that can be easily enforced with confidence.”

Cynerio is a premier sponsor of the HIMSS 2020 Cybersecurity Forum where CEO and co-founder, Leon Lerman, will present “Taking a Medical-First Approach to Solving Tomorrow’s IoMT Challenges” on March 9.
