A new study reveals heatwaves or climate change damages male sperms and impact fertility across generations. Heatwaves produced by climate change is also responsible for species deaths and extinctions in biodiverse populations. The research was published in the journal Nature Communications by scientists from the University of East Anglia.

The research leader, Prof. Matt Gage, stated that the ability to produce healthy sperms is reduced when heatwaves persist. According to him, a warmer atmosphere makes sperm production to be more volatile and hazardous. Since male species produce lesser volume of sperms which are invariable low quality with temperature changes, procreation becomes difficult and existing populations begin to die off.

“Since sperm function is essential for reproduction and population viability, these findings could provide one explanation for why biodiversity is suffering under climate change,” Gage explained.

To get to the root of the phenomenon, the researchers investigated the effects of heatwaves on red flour beetles (Tribolium castaneum).

The red flour beetles were exposed to simulated heatwaves to test male fertility. They were exposed to heatwaves which were 5°C to 7°C above their normal temperatures. The second group was exposed to normal environmental heat conditions for control experiment. At the end of the experiments, further tests were run to determine potential damage to the beetles’ reproductive success, sperm function and offspring quality.

Heatwaves Reduced Sperms Production and Quality 

When the study was over, the researchers found that higher temperatures reduced the ability of male beetles to fertilize their female counterparts by half. A second exposure to heatwaves almost sterilized the male beetles and made them infertile.

Incidentally, heatwaves did not impact female beetles; but it still does, because it damaged inseminated sperms inside their reproductive tracts. While the experimental temperatures killed male sperm production by half, and any surviving sperm struggled for viability inside the female reproductive tract.

Kirs Sales, one of the researchers, noted that the damaging effects of climate change on male fertility was consistent over time. Meanwhile, heatwaves did not only halve sperm production and viability, it also impacted sexual behavior since males mated half as frequently as those in normal forest conditions.

Offsprings of Exposed Species Suffer Reduced Male Functions and Fertility

To make matters worse, persistent or successive heatwaves were found to impact the health and viability of future generations of male species. Furthermore, offsprings raised by heatwaved dads or sperms of exposed dads, had shorter life spans – dying two months earlier than those in the control group.

Again, the sperms and reproductive capabilities of offsprings sired by heatwaves-exposed dads were negatively impacted. These offsprings produced less offsprings because they were less able to fertilize female mates. The authors of the study said the research reveals how species react to climate change or fare under heatwaves.

“Research has also shown that heat shock can damage male reproduction in warm blooded animals too, and past work has shown that this leads to infertility in mammals,” Sales wrote.
