Researchers found the gut microbiota of immigrants change within months of arriving the United States. The change in the composition and constitution of the immigrants’ microbiome could help scientists to understand how and why immigrants develop obesity and diabetes soon after settling down in the U.S.

The study is published in the journal Cell and titled “US Immigration Westernizes the Human Gut Microbiome.” The study was conducted by scientists from the University of Minnesota and the Hmong Partnership for Health and Wellness. The researchers ran their study among communities of immigrants that migrated from Southeast Asia.

American Diets Begin To Change the Microbiome of Immigrants within 6-9 Months

Senior author Dan Knights of the University of Minnesota disclosed that immigrants and refugees lose their native microbes as soon as they arrive the U.S. and acquire alien microbes seen in European-American people. The acquired gut bacteria do not totally dislodge the native microbes, but they create a loss of diversity with unpleasant health situations.

Earlier studies have established that people in poor and developing countries have a richer mix of gut microbiome than people resident in the U.S. These people possess a greater population of beneficial microbes in their intestines. Incidentally, these people undergo loss of diversity in their gut bacteria when they immigrate into the United States.

The research was inspired and assisted by a large community of settlers from Southeast Asia in Minnesota. There was particular focus on the Hmong and Karen people, ethnic minorities of people found in China, Burma and now Thailand.

Pajau Vangay, one of the study authors, noted that Hmong and Karen peoples are naturally slim people, but they start accummulating fat and becoming obese as soon as they come to the United States. So the author was focused on determining how American diets changed the microbiome of the people and caused them to start getting fat and even diabetic.

As part of the study, the researchers tracked a group of 19 Karen refugees as they relocated from Thailand and settled in America. They also analyzed the gut microbiota of their children born in the United States, and used Caucasian Americans as control experiment. The participants in the study were monitored for changes in their microbiome for the fist six to nine months following their arrival in the U.S.

Westernization of the Microbiome Is Linked To Obesity among Immigrants into America

The investigators discovered that the Western strain Bacteroides commenced to replace the foreign bacteria strain Prevotella brought by the immigrants. The Westernization of the native microbiome was fast within the first nine months, but continued over the first 10 years in the country. With time, the natural microbiome diversity of the immigrants and refugees got replaced with those acquired in the U.S.

The researchers confirmed that Western diet was largely responsible for the microbiome changes, but there were also some other inexplicable factors.

Notably, the changes were most prominent in the immigrants’ children. The scientists cannot explain why this is so. But they believe it is because the children were born in the U.S. and raised on typical American diets. The researchers realized that diversity in microbiome was worsened in children and later generations of American settlers. This had been seen in animals before, but never in humans before this time.

“When you move to a new country, you pick up a new microbiome,” Knights said. “And that’s changing not just what species of microbes you have, but also what enzymes they carry, which may affect what kinds of food you can digest and how your diet interacts with your health.”

Conclusively, the scientists found that Westernization of the microbiome may not necessarily be a bad thing, but it is associated with higher risks of obesity among American immigrants.
