Researchers say getting pregnant within a year of having a stillbirth does not put the pregnancy at risk. Any pregnancy within a short period of suffering a stillbirth is not subject to another stillbirth, pre-term birth, or small-for-gestational-age birth.

This finding is published in the journal The Lancet.

The study was conducted in Australia, Finland and Norway. It included 14,452 births that occurred from 1980 to 2016 – a 37-year period. The participants were mothers who had suffered a stillbirth with their previous pregnancy. The results of the stillbirths were compared with those previous live births. The researchers focused on these three countries because they –

  • Are predominantly white
  • Have access to universal healthcare
  • Have access to free antenatal care

Women Can Get Pregnant Again After a Stillbirth Without Fears for the Health of the Baby

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is best for women to wait a minimum 6 months after a miscarriage or induced abortion before getting pregnant again; and at least two years after a live birth before another conception.

However, there is no recommendation on how long to wait after a stillbirth.

“We hope that our findings can provide reassurance to women who wish to become pregnant or unexpectedly become pregnant shortly after a stillbirth,” said Dr. Annette Regan, Curtin University, Australia.

For the study, only singleton births and stillbirths that occurred after 22 weeks of gestation were considered. To calculate the space between the last stillbirth and another pregnancy, the researchers computed the delivery date of the new pregnancy minus the gestation age at birth. These were grouped as –

  • Less than 6 months
  • 6-11 months
  • 12-23 months
  • 24-59 months
  • More than 59 months

Ultimately, the research found no risks between stillbirths and subsequently pregnancies that occur 12 months later, as against those that occur between 24-59 months later. The risks for another stillbirth, pre-term birth or small-for-gestational-age remain negligible.

Mothers who suffer stillbirths usually concieve again within 9 months, and mothers who have live births get pregnant again on average of 25 months after, the study found. About 63% or 9,109 of the women participants got pregnant again within 12 months of a past stillbirth.

Dr. Regan said the risks between pregnancy spacing and child health are influenced by a number of factors. These include decreased nutrition from former pregnancy, cervical issues, and pregnancy that occurred while still breastfeeding a child.

Without sufficient time to recover from a previous pregnancy, women may be at increased risk of entering a reproductive cycle with poor nutritional status, which has been linked to increased risk of fetal growth restriction and birth defects.

What is most important in this situation, according to Mark Klebanoff of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in the U.S. is the current health, age, desired family size and emotional readiness of a woman to get pregnancy again after a pregnancy loss.
