Scientists from ETH Zurich in Switzerland found that effects of high-fat diet could be transmitted for three generations. Some of these effects include obesity, insulin resistance, and addictive-like behaviors. The study was published in the journal Translational Psychiatry.

The research study was conducted on lab mice.

First Study to See Effects of High-Fat Diet on Third Generation of Overfed Female Rats

For the experiment, the researchers fed high-fat diet to the mice before, during and after pregnancy. Second generation or grandchildren of these mice exhibited heightened liking for drugs, signs of obesity, and alterations in their metabolism. The third generation or great-grandchildren of the rats showed marked differences between the males and females. The males indicated features of obesity while the females showed addiction to certain substances.

Incidentally, the original female mice that gave birth to the second and third generation offsprings did not become overweight in any manner, and the first generation of babies they bore did not eat high-fat diet.

Prior studies had examined the effects of diet on second generation as well as the long-term effects obesity and diabetes on immediate offsprings of rats. But this current research is the first of its kind to analyze the effects of high-fat diet up to the third generation of female rats who overfed on such foods.

The scientists evaluated factors such as body weight, insulin sensitivity, metabolic rates, and insulin plus cholesterol within blood plasma in the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the mice. Then they exposed the mice to high-fat diet and normal lab diet to see which ones the mice would choose. They also exposed them to alcohol and water to determine their choices. Then they checked their activity levels following exposure to amphetamines.

This Study Would Enable Humans to Understand How Food Impacts Future Generations

The reason for this research method was to see if high-fat diet consumed by female rats impacted on the obesity, excessive eating habits and sensitivity to drugs in latter generations.

“To combat the current obesity epidemic, it is important to identify the underlying mechanisms and to find ways for early prevention,” said Dr. Peleg-Raibstein, lead author of the study. “It may also provide a way of identifying risk factors for how people develop obesity and addiction and suggest early interventions for at-risk groups.”

Raibstein noted that the study could help pregnant and breastfeeding couples to understand how high-fat diet could impact their children’s health up to the third generation. This knowledge would guide them into consuming healthy foods so that their future generations could have healthier lives.

He said this research could not be conducted on humans due to factors such as socio-economic background, food preferences of parents, and existing health conditions. “The mouse model allowed us to study the effects of a high-fat diet on subsequent generations without these factors,” he said.

The authors call for more studies to evaluate the exact molecular mechanisms determining how high-fat diets consumed by female species transmit unfavorable effects to generations down the line.
