2,302 Plastic Collectors Prevented One Million Kg of Ocean Plastic Pollution

Plastic Bank announced in a recent release that they made tremendous impact in 2018. The international organization which aims to raise one billion people to collect and earn a stable income recycling plastic waste, is dedicated to preventing the flow of plastic waste into oceans around the world.

The organization revealed that they engaged 2,302 plastic collectors in 2018 to gather plastic waste and earn a decent income doing so. But beyond this, Plastic Bank announced they collected 1,090,564 kilogram (2.39 million pounds) of plastic waste which is equivalent to 39,260,304 plastic bottles that could have ended up in the oceans last year.

The ocean-plastic prevention organization works primarily in Haiti, the Philippines and Indonesia where they operate 74 collection centers.

Plastic Bank Incentivizes People to Recycle Plastic Waste to Prevent Ocean Pollution

With the introduction of the organization’s Social Plastic and Plastic Neutral program, thousands of poor people have been dignified with paid employment and poverty reduction ongoing in partner countries. The programs enable people to offset their own plastic usage by funding the activities of people who remove them from the environment.

Established in March 2013 by David Katz and Shaun Frankson in Canada, Plastic Bank commits to arresting the flow of plastic waste to oceans by empowering plastic collectors to gather and recycle the plastic. According to Katz, the only way for people around the world to stop ocean plastic is to reveal the value in plastic by transferring as much value as possible into the hands of the collectors.

“Once the true value of plastic waste is revealed,” Katz submitted, “it becomes too valuable to leak into the ocean.”

Several companies in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and other parts of the world have risen to the plastic challenge by banning the use of plastic materials in their operations. Businesses such as McDonald’s and Starbucks banned the use of plastic straws with people everywhere agreeing to why plastic is being banned.

Plastic Bank Says Every Individual Uses About 84kg of Plastic per Year

Plastic waste does not only constitute an eyesore and a nuissance in our environment, it destroys aquatic life since fish and even marine birds nibble on them, and causes the release of carbon-dioxide into the atmosphere. Plastic Bank said it prevented 1,636 metric tonnes of carbon-dioxide from entering into the atmosphere by the volume of plastic collected in 2018.

Environmental analysts say one metric tonne of recycled plastic waste conservatively prevents 1.5 metric tonnes of carbon emission. Meanwhile, researchers say the average individual uses 84kg of plastic per year.

Plastic Bank has been helped in its global campaign against ocean plastic with the launching of its Ted Talk in late 2017. The program has generated massive publicity for the group with thousands of people and businesses partnering up to raise awareness and promote the mission of the organization.
